Yasanti

It can happen to the best of us: you’re busy at the office or running errands, agree to meet a friend / lover / business partner for lunch, and a bottle of wine and two gin & tonics later suddenly you both feel like, um, a nap. And now what? Drive home? Occupy the meeting room? Thank capitalism for its ability to find a solution to any problem. Yasanti, a sailing boat-turned-hotel in the Old Port, offers a three-hour siesta service for €50 a cabin, two drinks and use of the deck chairs included. If you want to go on deck, that is. You might just feel, um, too sleepy./ Kati

Hort del Xino

A big upside of the economic crisis is that it's put an end to the construction craze, leaving a number of inner-city plots to be turned into dumpsters by grateful neighbours tired of dealing with overflowing rubbish bins. But a handful of residents of the Raval deprived their barrio of one of their beloved trash dumps and turned it into an urban veggie garden. Now, a year later, they've cleared the large plot of the rocks and beer cans, and thanks to their compost, stuff actually grows there. The Hort del Xino is open to everyone who’d like to grow their own tomatoes, enjoy some physical labour, or dispose of their organic waste where it will actually be recycled. Just pass by on an open Sunday afternoons, have a little chat, and with luck you’ll leave with a key!/ Kati

Kimök

So what’re you gonna go for…? You can build the frozen yogurt sensation of your dreams. You start with the yogurt base, and then try to control yourself when it comes to creating a temple of indulgence as you decide which toppings to adorn it with. Crunchy choco biscuits, muesli, strawberries, raspberry sauce, or any other fruit for that matter. Delicious decisionsKimök is the creation of María and Valeria, who can pride themselves on their home made, sugar free, probiotic frozen yogurt, to which we can have the great pleasure of sampling in their little parlour. It’s hidden away near the Cathedral, and if you visit today, and there’s enough to choose from, believe me. Mmmmmm./ Nona Vilar Trans. by Kat

How about we have some cocktails tonight? Sounds good, right? But, how about if we set up the bar in your house? Or even better, what do you think about somebody teaching you all the alchemist's secrets of a cocktail shaker, and you can then amaze your guests with some amazing drinks? Well, all of this and much more is what Drinksmotion is offering: a school of cocktail courses where drinks lovers, amateurs and professionals are equally welcome in order to dive in the hidden mysteries behind a bar. Besides that, they also offer a mobile bar service which may go to any event with a whole cocktail kit in order to the delight of all your guests. We´ll be ordering some Daiquiris, and maybe you can prepare the next round for us. Mention Le Cool at the time you contact them and they´ll give you a discount. Bright and multifunctional spaces are in vogue, especially if they’re located in a recently created plaza (so to speak), next to the controversial Hotel W. La Viblia has the “showroom” word in its name, in their inauguration they hooked up with Metal magazine and presented the new painting collection by the famous fashion photographer J.M. Ferrater, and, why not, it’s also a restaurant-terrace-store-art gallery that gathers the last fashion trends, art, culture and design with the passion for the world of wine. As if the good prices and the fact the wine is great weren’t already decisive argumentations. Why don’t you go and try it? Or are you afraid of not being good enough for it? Museo de ideas e inventos

Without ideas there’d be no evolution. There wouldn’t be the world we know today. Imagination, fantasy and passion would've been over. “Impossible is nothing” would’ve been the biggest lie. And the words “outrageous”, “surprising” and “never seen” wouldn’t have popped of anyone’s mouth. Ideas are what keep our motor running. What surrounds us. The inventions that have change our ways of thinking and living. So, from today on, they’re forming a museum. A museum that is itself a great idea. An idea that starts at the entrance and extends to its slides, its floors, lifts and toilets, going through the contemporary inventions room, the impossible inventions and the temporary. Just because, at Miba everything deserves to be contemplated and admired for what it is: a great idea. At last it has became real./ Lorena Pedre Trans by Susana Sarsfield

Kettlebells Barcelona

Think Russian, strong like a bull while sweating bullets in a concrete circus studio framed with trapezes, ropes and high bars. This is where for one grueling hour trainer Leo Cavallo leads, with tough love through a series of stretches and repetition, exercises accompanied by bell shaped weights of 8 to 48 kg called kettlebells. Taking its fundamentals from the routines followed by Russian shot putters and gymnasts, kettlebells is a workout that manages to be graceful, hardcore and addictive at the same time. With stoic patience and a rippling jungle beat in the background, Leo will have you sore in the way you´re supposed to be to get your summer-time body and the strength for a lifetime./ Gabriel

Jardín Terapeútico Vil·la Florida

A therapeutic garden? In Barcelona? That's right! The gardens of the Vil·la Florida, over in the Sant Gervasi neighborhood, have a pilot program of a therapeutic garden within the greater urban garden. Following the model in other countries like Germany, wellness and nature combine to create a space in the open air where we can enjoy the benefits of natural medicine. With a double treatment of hydrotherapy and reflexology, we can do things like activate the circulation of our legs and reduce stress. If, in addition, we keep in mind that this is a place recommended for people from age 1 to 100, success is a sure thing. So, why don't we kick off our shoes and take a walk in the garden. I've been waiting for the sun to come back to give my feet a barefoot treat./ Mar Vara Trans. by Don Vito

Deuvedes

Video shops may seem like a prehistoric concept to you in our current virtual era, but there are still a few around. And the ones that do exist do so because the owners live, sleep and dream cinema. One such shop is Deuvedes in Gràcia. They are so passionate about the big screen, that they even project movies on Wednesday nights at 10 o'clock. The next viewings include Dirty Dancing, and Banksy’s Exit Through The Gift Shop. They’ve even sorted out the G&T’s at a bar in the video club, so you can sip a Hendrick’s to your hearts delight or let the cocktail maestro Carles Bonnin mix you up a Gin Seagrams right there on the spot. A damned fine bar, a movie, DJ’s and great conversation about cinema, what more could you ask for to have a perfect night?/ Aleix Ibars Trans. by Kat

Food Cultura

This charming little hideaway has chosen to define themselves in such an adorable way that I couldn’t help but feel tempted to stop writing with just this: a bridge between the stomach, head and heart. They don’t have any cards up their sleeves. Their message is direct and precise. Food Cultura escapes traditional indexing in large part due to the fact that, apart from serving as a platform to explore food’s undeniably meaningful part in culture, this particular “home” holds an art gallery where one can find anything from imaginary dishes to culinary maps for different regions throughout the world. Above all else, they’re also baking up some enticing workshops and exhibitions for those looking to gain some valuable expertise. Not only that, soon they’ll be throwing tastings and a pop-up Christmas bonanza which is bound to indulge the senses. Your taste buds couldn’t be happier./ María Arranz Trans. by Trevor

With so much cool places closing their doors in the middle of this uncertain economic climate, it's nice to see that, although some places close, others arrive with renewed energy and interesting proposals. MOB is a new space located in an old textile warehouse in c/Bailén where work projects, classes and various activities (that range from an exhibition to a concert) coexist. A multifunctional space with a collaborative spirit and a great desire to share knowledge, a space where ideas are born, grow up and reproduce, all in the same place. MOB is' Makers of Barcelona', but it could also be 'Multiple Occurrences of Brilliance' or 'Meeting Of Brains'. An open and flexible space where creativity is in the air. 1000m² of creative space without borders, in the heart of Barcelona. Come to meet them?/ Mila Doré

Museo del Rey de la Magia

Anyone who opens a museum dedicated to magic in this modern age is someone to take your hat off to (yes, your top hat, the one with the white rabbit). And when that person has a history of 130 years running a veritable temple to magic in Calle Princesa, they are truly deserving of our awe. The near-mythical King of Magic has taken on the challenge of imagining, creating and promoting a place where the art of illusion can be experienced by everyone. It all happens in Calle Jonqueres, where you can find an impressive collection of objects, books and posters, sketches of tricks, sections dedicated to oriental magic and great illusions, genre histories, and of course, magic wands, cards and dice. Oh yes, and the theatre, where the magic becomes reality. Abracadabra!/ María Arranz Trans. by Suky Taylor
