Bar Velcro

Here we a have a chameleonic place as no other; ideal for a quiet beer after a cinema evening, as well as good to watch an exciting football match or just to immerse yourself in the most modern nocturne evening that the weekend can offer. Because this little bar surely knows how to create a good atmosphere. It´s elegant lighting slides around the sofas and armchairs, creating a cozy atmosphere like a living room. The delicious cocktails offered are carefully prepared under the rhythm of an impeccable soundtrack which can include from Moderat to Triángulo de Amor Bizarro. And the service given from behind the bar by its young owners are the finishing touch of this magnetic place located in the heart of the Gracia neighborhood. Style, music and familiarity merged enviably./ Eva A. Prats Trans. by Carol & James

Café Royale

If there’s a glamorous spot in this city, there’s no doubt that it’s a bar hidden in a dark narrow street next to Plaza Real, with comfy designer couches, a warm lighting, beautiful people, a minimalist decoration and, of course, the soul, funk and bossa fusions by its in-house DJs (or live flamenco nights on Tuesdays or jazz on Wednesdays) that make you dance whether you want it or not. Yep, we’re talking about Café Royale, which is reopening after being renovated, but its spirit is intact (there are some good news in Barcelona’s nightlife after all). It may sound like the typical pretentious bar full of tourists and, although it does get packed (and foreigners abound), it’s far from that. Actually, it’s simply one of the grooviest places to start any night if you’re in the centre. Welcome back!/ Marta Bausells

Bollocks

You won’t need a black leather jacket, skinny jeans and long hair to get in (not even a bombastic blonde riding a Harley), cause Bollocks’ is all about creating an ambience that matches the current situation. It’s not about being “heavy” (metal) place but a “hard” (rocking) one, which can be translated, according to the Royal Music Academy, to Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath; all this taking a swig while Bon Scott tells you he’s driving on a Highway to Hell (which in his case, came true). To dance, listen or simply drink, other bands like Def Leppard, Guns n’ Roses and Motley Crüe will be part of this date with a genuine hard rock... bar (never café), and even bands from this century, like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. / Francisco Estrada Trans. by Susana Sarsfield

L'Entresòl

It's called L’Entresòl, because its two artisans, Roderic and Miles, live in an entresuelo (not together in the same one but it was a coincidence). They've got more than 35 different gins, each of higher quality than the last, and so-armed they're ready to mix up the best of gin & tonics. They've got indie music going in the background most nights of the weeks, save Thursdays when the bassist of Mendetz plays some hand-chosen groove. The bar is charming and you're greeted at the entrance by a sizable poster of their preferred bands and that alone can be the clincher in choosing this haunt. Dusky but cozy, with a room at the end that can end up becoming a dance-floor. And the most surprising thing of all: It's in Gràcia! So take a jaunt out of the center over to the village in the city, because it's said than in this bag “you come in alone, but you don't have to leave that way”./ Leo Altés Trans. by Don Vito

All my friend told me was that there is a good bar near Metro Maragall and when I walked in, there were so many beers I had never seen (and I think I know beer), my mouth was watering immediately. Just go there, pick something, you'll like it. Then we got hungry and as I live and breathe I had the best patatas bravas in 20 years in Barcelona –they even serve them with a six pack of different kinds of sauces. The nachos were perfect, the sandwiches were good, the place is clean as a whistle but the beer –a paradise. The bar has no pretentions, it's not in the usual tourist areas and the two people who run it, Susana and Diego, know their beer, love their work and know how to treat customers. But don't ask for advice, just read the menu and try anything, you can thank me later./ Hankster

Timeline Bar

Timeline is a new addition to the world of tiny bars in Gracia, and is well worth a mention. Tucked into a side street, it’s a rather quaint little bar with a really great atmosphere. Describing it as mellow and candlelit might sound very soppy and romantic, but it isn’t. Instead it’s really cosy and welcoming. Spend Monday night sipping mojitos for 3€ all night. Tuesdays you get a free tapa with every drink - not 3 breadsticks in a slab of brownish guacamole like in other places, but a beautifully crafted little dish. And then there’s the weekend, when a hangover curing brunch can be yours for 15€. Most of the furniture has been thrifted at the Encants and given new life at this bar, but Timeline isn’t purposefully scruffy, nor is it overly cute. It’s just really, really nice. You should go./ Senka

Bar Calders

Sant Antoni is on fire. Shortly after Federal's star appearance on the corner of Parlament with Borrell, another little treasure in pops up, in the shape of a bar with terrace dotted with flowers, offering homemade tapas, vermouth for the more refined palate, friendly staff and an awesome musical selection right on the same block. I headed down there last Sunday for the first time and let me tell you, as the people’s princess Sra. Esteban would say, it ticks ALL the boxes: quality java, daily news and sun pouring through the window. Can’t think of a nicer place to take last night’s squeeze for a bit of brekkie, be alone with Bataille, a pen and paper, or meet a friend to put the world to rights. Strange how, sometimes, from a dead end street (Passatge Calders) one can find their way. Luis, up for a coffee whenever you are./ Bic Cristal Trans. by Aoife

Bobby Gin

It seems that recently Barcelona has been top of the list for gourmet food and drink. In fact, it has been coming first, second and third. First for gourmet hamburger joints, second for cake shops and third for gin bars. Since I am veggie and you don’t get magdalenas like my mum used to make, I have taken it upon myself to become an expert in the third category. The latest hidden treasure is in Gràcia and it is called Bobby Gin. Like a new-found religion (and, at this rate, one we’ll be practising) they have seized the Sex Pistols slogan preaching “God Save The Gin” and are serving luxury cocktails and gin and tonics to die for. And quite rightly so because behind the bar is Alberto Pizarro (best bartender, World Class Spain 2011), high priest of what can already be considered the new temple of the Barcelona g&t. Disset 17 Graus

Let's be honest: going out to have a glass of wine has always sounded a little "snobby." It is true, though, that in other parts of the peninsula it’s the most common thing there is. However, in the area we are in, we usually leave the wine-drinking part for dinner with friends or for people who want to impress their spouses. But this all changes now. The Disset Graus has decided to open a wine bar oriented towards local youth, which is why they came up with and an extremely varied menu including international and Catalan wines, plus cocktails and gin and tonics (of course). And to make sure all this good stuff doesn’t go to our heads too much and too fast, we get to accompany the assortment with some of the tapas they offer. They’ve also taken great care of the place’s design and musical selection, which is provided via ScannerFM. So this weekend, it’s all about the wine, don’t you agree?/ Mila Doré Trans. by Nina
