Anna Karina. La princesa de la Nouvelle Vague

When we talk of Nouvelle Vague, Jean-Luc Godard springs to mind, rewriting the rules, in Jean-Paul Belmondo and a style which would effortlessly cross the timeless boundaries of celluloide. You might also think of the 10-minute walk across the Louvre, the fabulous dance which years later would inspire Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" and consequently, it's hypnotic leading character. Anna Karina, Godard's muse par excellence and timid fashion icon, is now condensed and concentrated into 189 pages, written with enviable enthusiasm, passion and delicacy. An ideal book to discover the Danish actress, to be swept away by her natural charm and to better understand her transcendence beyond the camera. Without a doubt, a wonderful homage paid to the eternal princess of Nouvelle Vague./ Eva A. Prats Trans. by Aoife

Hongos de Yuggoth

H. P. Lovecraft might not be especially celebrated for his poems (in fact, he himself was critical of them and described his poetic activity as “compulsive imitation”). It's true, the hermit of Providence gained great fame with his stories of terror which serve as a reference for the genre, but nary a peep is mentioned about his poems. But it's time for that to take an about face, with the strange diamond in the rough that is “Hongos de yuggoth”, a magnificent collection of poems laced with the elements that made Lovercraft a true genius of science fiction and launched his own mythology: dreams, astronomy, murky nights and eerie forests... What's more, this delightfully dark edition is illustrated by Carmen Burguess and Daniela Zahra and comes with a prologue by the always brilliant Javier Calvo. A little luxury to enjoy in the gathering dusk of these stormy fall nights./ Marieta Trans. by Don Vito

Animalario Universal del Profesor Revillod

In theory this book is supposed to illustrate the findings of one man’s zoological expeditions, but with a bit of ingenious slicing and brilliantly detailed drawings, it has the potential to provide endlessly different and humorous creations. This pocket-sized reference comes off as having somehow traveled from the 18th century to our own, with the innocent intention of playfully teasing our imaginations. The “Fabulous Almanac of World Fauna” is a freak show circus where carphants, half-carp and half-elephants, run rampant and rhinadillos are common place. The possibilities are boundless. The curator of such a mighty body of work is none other than Professor Revillod who painstakingly dedicated his life to exploring the farthest reaches of the planet and revealing the beauty that reckless breeding can create. This phenomenal complication of the animal world now makes playing God look easy./ María Arranz Trans. by Trevor

Píldoras azules

I remember always hearing in college that your typical “boy-meets-girl” story was the easiest to write and get some sort of reaction to. That’s probably true, but this illustrated novel turns this overused template on its head and into an experience that’s anything but conventional. It tells the story of how Fredrick met Cati, an HIV-positive mother, and how the two of them dealt with her grueling treatment. Choosing not to fall back on melodrama, it bounces between humor and examining our insatiable will to keep living. Peeters’s wonderfully vivid illustrations close the gap between you and this seemingly distant subject matter to make identifying with the characters actually seem plausible. Coming off the success of “Pildoras azules” (Blue Pills), he has gone on to illustrate works like “Lupus” and “Dándole vueltas”./ Marta Montull Trans. by Trevor

Cien mil millones de poemas

How many lifetimes would we need just to be able to read one hundred thousand millions of poems? With the pace of life we lead and the short amount of time that we dedicate to poetry (and reading in general), probably more than few. And moreover, how much space would that occupy on the shelves of our small and humble dwellings? Well, maybe you wont be able of reading all of them but about the space you wont have to suffer. And, in fact, this book only contains 10 sonnets of 14 verses each one, but thanks to a few simple cuts in his pages, the verses can be combined between them, so that in total you get thousand of different poems. A good way to play with poetry and feeling that we are mixing verses of others. And the experience is even better if the author of the interchangeable poems is Raymon Queneau. Shall we play? / Verso suelto Trans. by María Buendía

Orfidal

Oh! If I could only tell you the number of hours I’ve spent (some might say wasted) bouncing around online from one article to the other, and then walking away from my laptop with the feeling that I’ve gained an unfathomable amount of useful, even lifesaving, information which inexplicably enough, I will never be able to recall or put to use. Enlightenment or simply meaningless amusement used to be spread through word of mouth, and for those of us who like scavenging through bins in the back of bookshops, there were fanzines. Orfidal isn’t afraid to wear their DIY heart on their sleeves, so don’t let their austere style make you think these guys are here to mess around. A single issue can feature anything from the perturbing “Surrealist Pop on the Alpujarra Ranges” to the risqué “Too Galician, too Catalan”. Offbeat anecdotes notable enough to actually tell another human being about. Who would’ve thought such a thing still existed?/ Marieta Trans. by Trevor

Yo mataré monstruos por ti

Admit it, every time you’re about to hit the hay you feel the impulse to check under your bed. You’re fearful you’ll encounter terrible creatures made of dust, or secret doors to infinite new dimensions, like what unravels in the debut editorial from Love of Lesbian's singer, Santi Balmes. It’s true that we all yearn for someone to defeat those monsters that haunt and pursue us. That someone, in Balmes editorial, is Martina, a girl who fears the discovery of an alternate universe, a world in reverse, where colorful animals walk upside-down on their heads and the reflections of people and buildings that appear in the earth go on forever in surreal detail. Just imagine that whilst snoozing, you suddenly fall into this crazy void and find yourself face to face with what could either be your worst nightmare, or the beginning of your greatest adventure./ Beatriz Corral Trans. by Isaac

Correo Dadá

They were the years leading into the roaring 20’s, the last of the First World War. Europe had been devastated and obfuscated by the disenchantment provoked by the war. However, a small Swizz cabaret birthed, in this same era, the cultural and artistic “anti-movement” that was Dadaism; declaring war on stupidity and the political and social decorum of the moment. A beam of light of which Austrian artist, Raul Haussman, was art and part. Der Dadasophe, along with being the inventor of photographic collages, sound poetry, and being one of the founders of the Dadá Club in Berlin, he’s also who’s hiding behind this review of Dadaism through his manifestations and proclamations. The perfect book for lovers of the senseless and the tireless warriors against stupidity./ Magenta Trans. by Marsha

The Collected fanzines, by Harmony Korine

Harmony Korine is the strange prodigy who wrote the script for the film Kids at only 22, and jumped on the Dogma 95 bandwagon to tell the story of his schizophrenic uncle in the unsettling film Gummo. Love him or hate him, you won't be left indifferent. But before he became the respected independent film director he is today, he was a prolific fanzine creator: My Friend, Adulthood and Pocahontas Monthly are some of the limited edition titles he published. Fanzines written, as he said himself, during endless sleepless nights spent smoking cigars, watching Henny Youngman monologues and writing jokes. It's taken him years to make up this collection, because he never kept any of them, but now, finally, they're all brought together in this fantastic edtion./ Magenta Trans. by Suky Taylor

El asalto a la cultura

If you get a flutter in your stomach when you hear the word revolution; if you want to know which movements are utopian, why the political party as an engine for social change is use-less, who are the Motherfuckers, what Manchester United football hooligans have to do with punk, why putting together a rock band called Monty Cantsin is a critique of the star system. If you want to know about the ancestors of copyleft, how sending letters by post can be an effective method of subversion. Basically, if you want to understand the relationship between play, art and politics, and the roots of contemporary creative activism, this book by Stewart Home is a summary of the most interesting links between movements as original as Lettrism, Neoism and Class War. This is itching powder for the masses!/ Cactus Lima Trans. by Suky Taylor

Memorias de la tierra

I’ve always been thinking that if I were to be back in school again and we had the chance to make one of those awesome time capsules where each of us could put in only one object, that I would definitely choose one of Miguel Brieva’s books. It’s just that the Sevillian artist knows like nobody else how to capture the zeitgeist of the era we live in: capitalism, unbridled consumerism, dissatisfaction, money, destruction of the planet ... and all that with a sublime irony and with a charming retro-iconography that seems to come straight from a magazine-ad from the 60’s. Innocent images, which are like an accurate kick in the crotch of the apocalypse we live everyday. Brieva now releases a new book, this time focusing on the theme of ecology in which he collects the regularly published cartoons of the supplement "Earth", plus a good amount of unreleased material. A must./ María Arranz Trans. by Nina

The new artisans

It’s no secret that handmade clothes and accessories are the latest trend, and economic motives are not the only thing making all the young designers jump on the bandwagon. Appreciation of artisan, well-made, authentic products have made this a booming market, and now the work of a new generation is showcased in a book, with more than 70 artists and designers from around the world who use classic techniques and materials to create the next step in modern designs. Singular pieces aimed at customers who live in the shopping age but demand products with a certain meaning. This book reconciles the folk artisan concept with everyday modernity, from textiles to jewellery; illustration to furniture and décor. A fascinating exploration that includes work from Spanish names such as “Kraszani”, Depeapa and SuTurno./ Vir Trans. by Suky Taylor
