Thai New Year, an occasion to show respect of respect to Buddha, peers and elders by sprinkling some water over them, letting the sins wash away. If you are a visitor to Bangkok, you are more likely to see the city submerged in massive water fights, hideous flowery shirts, the always controversial spaghettistraps, and even the firefighters joining at times. And yes, armed or unarmed, you are game, so better grab a gun; hoses, empty rubbish bins filled with icy water are also sanctioned under the Songkran convention.

As for us, we are outta here, fast. Been there, done that…so we are going to tick another boxes in our “1001 things to do in your lifetime” list. For those of you who stay here, whether out of choice or not, we are leaving you with some options to enjoy once you dry up.

See you in two weeks, folks. Stay wet. Stay safe. Sawatdee Pee Mai to you all.

Tonchabab Record Store

Whether you are a vinyl junkie, a casual collector, a music nerd or if you're just feeling a bit nostalgic, you know dropping by a music shop can definitely bring back memories of analog times and unforgettable soundtracks. The long-running Tonchabab Record Store is the kind of place that reminds you why in-person music browsing will always have some room in our online-shopping culture. Apart from an impressive-yet-surprising array of local and international second-hand records (12” and 7” singles included), this hole-in-the-wall shop retains its intimate lived-in charm. Be advised that at first sight it can seem a bit overwhelming, but set aside some time as treasures from every genre are to be had. With a vinyl-listening station and very friendly staff, prepare to travel in time the better part of any spare day. / Le Cool

Maisen

If you have been to Tokyo and have a penchant for Tonkatsu, you must have probably dropped by Maisen, and when you caught wind they were opening in Bangkok, you probably can’t deny you got a little overexcited. The king of Japanese comfort food; an earthy, unpretentious piece of pork wrapped in a crisp, fine golden coating is given here so much attention that puts many others in the same craft to shame. This is slow food tonkatsu; so you get to chose the fatty or the lean meat, and to wait a good fifteen minutes before your piece hits the table while you entertain yourself with the finely grated cabbage salad . Should you close your eyes while you savour your first piece you would never think this is a restaurant chain, or that you are in a mall. / Le Cool

Bonita Café and Social Club

Stepping into this space is like being transported into an early 20th century American abode. Furnished with vintage relics, books for leisure, an amiable staff; It’s reminiscent of an old-country era, before cookie-cutter, modernesque cafes. Its menu is full of the caffeine junkie essentials and a thorough selection of delish western food faves. Think: burgers, hot dogs, and bacon cheese sandwiches… minus the LDL cholesterol. How do they pull it off? It's 100 percent vegan. But don't get skeptical, because this place stays packed with vegans and non-vegans alike. The dining room setup invites strangers to become buddies over the course of a latte, so it’s likely you’ll skip the free WI-FI and opt to share anybody that crashes through this spot. Exit with a pleased palate and a couple of new friends. / Qeiara Chanel

The Trapeze Swingers

Vintage lovers, one for you. Tucked away literally just few steps away from Khao San Road and its abominable daily fashion, The Trapeze Swingers has long been the secret place where Bangkok´s hipsters go for authentic, colourful, inspiring and very definitely not new fashion must-haves; whether a Moschino Cheap & Chic cropped jacket, a shiny Hawaiian shirt, an elusive Rolling Stones tee or some Americana sportswear. Not to mention the meticulously deconstructed and customized flower power swimwear the owners beautifully handcraft themselves. Of particular interest is its small but surprising secondhand vinyl, CDs and tape collection. Happy hunting! / Le Cool

Hidden in an office complex opposite Rama 9 Hospital, Anotai is an organic vegetarian restaurant named after its Cordon-Bleu educated owner, Anotai Kongwattana. When Anotai decided to open her restaurant she also started her own certified organic farm “Rai Pluk Rak” in Ratchaburi. All vegetables & herbs are sourced directly from the farm to your table. The menu includes a variety of Thai dishes, organic salads, pastas and herbal juices. Must try dishes include their “Larb Tao Huu” and “Nam Prik Om”. After a healthy meal, you can reward yourself with something sweet from Anotai’s wide range of desserts. You will also find “Rai Pluk Rak” products for sale here, including certified organic sauces, salad dressings and dried herbs. I often listen to people grumbling about how dirty, messy and heavily polluted Bangkok is. This sure is not Kyoto, and it will never be. Shame. But if you really feel the need of escaping from this concrete jungle and its eco-unfriendly environment for a while, you will always find Phra Padaeng´s wild card on your pocket. If you have never walked around Khloeng Toei district, once you arrive there, you won´t even imagine that by paying the leftovers from the taxi fare to a boatman you´ll be taken to a place where no cars go. But before you start exploring this Bangkok´s green belt either walking or cycling, I suggest you turn around and enjoy the panoramic view of the urban mess from this inner-city tropical paradise. Now go ahead and get lost. Play Bangkok at its wildest. / Le Cool

Gallery Drip Coffee

What makes this place special is largely what it doesn’t have: an espresso machine. Instead it opts for simpler equipment: two rows of ceramic, funnel-shaped cones set on raised wooden platforms, which are manually loaded with paper filters and filled with coffee grounds. The staff makes the entire process look straightforward, but if you look closer, you can’t help but admire the attention to detail they bring to every drink, manifested in their weighing of beans before hand grinding, their rinsing of the paper filters before loading, their setting of timers before dripping – with slow, practiced movements – narrow mouthed pitchers of near-boiling water over individual servings of grinds. There are beverages for casual coffee drinkers and tea-lovers, well-done standards like iced drip lattes and matcha green teas. But if you’re at all curious at how varied and bright coffee can be, it’s worth giving Gallery’s rotating list of single-origin coffees a try. / James Yu

Had anyone told me I would be a little excited about a restaurant where everything gravitates around tofu, I would have given then more than a little skeptical look. In my defense I must say, I eat other living beings of the animal kind, I do not consume yoga, either hot or cold and I am unclear about the meaning of the work chakra, but now that I have visited tofu paradise, I must admit I feel that even paying for It in sexual favours would be perfectly justified; I never thought tofu could be such a delicate, jitter-inducing quality fare. I tend to be pretty evangelical about my new discoveries, so until my fickle taste buds find something new, here you will find me, and yet, no yoga please. / Le Cool

CSA Munching Box

We’ve all been to the supermarket deli, tasted the bland mix of overly shiny and overly pricey vegetables and felt the pressing need to go somewhere else. The question is…where? Farmers markets don’t happen everyday, and believe me, after a long day at work and a what it seems a longer commute, I don’t really feel like growing my greens on the balcony or milk the neighbour’s buffalo, though I would love to take care of his bloody chicken. The munching box guys don’t deliver buffalos for milking (yet) but they deliver boxes of organically grown greens and fruit right to your doorstep. From your bananas to your leeks or daikon radish, it’s all in the box (these blokes even have figs) and all you have to do is drop them an email and arrange your deliveries. They also promise to battle floods, alien invasions and jelly beans storms to get you your treats on time. / Le Cool

Love antiquing? Then you should check Talat FaiChai in Chinatown district, also known as the Flashlight market, a flea market that only takes place on Saturdays after-dark (the main reason to remind shoppers that flashlights are highly advisable in this mission). Street stalls stationed around the block with old bric-a-brac attract both vintage hunters and bargain shopaholics, while district´s neighbours dive in search of lost treasures: Unwanted memorabilia, second hand clothes, antique furniture, classic houseware, records, books and more…you name it. Be on the watch out for unexpected random unloadings too. Ten years after its opening, Dāsa keeps claiming to be (and the readers, celebrating what probably is) the best-stocked secondhand bookshop in town. Whether it´s mystery, horror, fantasy, politics or true crime, or maybe a travel opus that helps to put yourself in context for your next destination, here you may find what you´re looking for, no matter the language. And in the odd case you don´t, you´ll definitely find something else that tickles your fancy. Have you ever wondered how to spoil that horse loving, gambling addict inner you? Fret no more, ladies and gents, for your prayers have been answered. The answer? Probably not far from you and even served by public transport of the air- conditioned kind. It is not often that you have the chance to take the ride back home with more money in your pocket than when you left. Probably one of the most graceful sights in a city where they do not abound, you can spend a few hours with the rich and famous, at a fraction of the price it would take you anywhere else. I clearly know nothing about horseracing but I can recognize a perfect venue with potential for a bit of comic vaudeville when I see one. Want to have your own Ascot? Also can. A tea-shop that sells tea in Chinatown, as avant-garde as selling pints of Guinness at an Irish Pub, you might be thinking. I also looked at it with suspicion, and actually before crossing the door to this rather diminutive space I could already see the hipster playground that it would be, with the hippest of them all sprawled about, MacBooks in hands, like renditions on Manet paintings of the 21st century. No hipsters to be seen (yet), but plenty of tea excellence, some baked goodies and a tea passionate owner. I will spare you the “oasis nested in Chinatown” babble and will be leave you with the message my friend texted me instead, which originated my first visit:” Owner has highly knowedgeable and intense delight in tea and tea culturing.  Talking with him makes you gain more desire to want the good tea. Or Tor Kor

Last weekend I lead a hangover tour of Jatujak market (God Bless visitors) and I finished empty handed, with a blinding headache and an iffy stomach that needed to be silenced. My visitors, poor devils, had underestimated what JJ can do to a body decimated by alcohol, so I was presented with the big question: where can you eat quickly, well and reasonably chilled when you have visitors in town? Thankfully I had heard rumours about Or Tor Kor market, and within minutes I was settled with a humongous dish of fried chicken and Som Tam (no poo for me, please) which I have turned to my hangover remedy since I moved to the Kingdom. There is (thanks, Lord) air con, it has the A to Z of Thai food, cooked and not, and no pools of dubious water to splash on. And yes, it is still the real deal. Think of it as the gourmet version of that wild wild west that Khlong Toei market is. / Le Cool

The Film Archive is the true real stronghold for non-commercial cinema you can find. Here are kept, safe and sound, films and cinema-related materials with a simple purpose: preserving the Thai cultural heritage as well as offering you access to its very rare collections. Sri Salaya Cinema, the country’s first community cinema, where films are still shown daily (17.30 on weekdays / 13:00 on weekends, with no admission fee!) is also here. Besides its daily screenings, Sri Salaya also hosts the Cinema School and the “Cherd Songsri” audiovisual library. Maybe you think this was reason enough for a visit, but the best excuse to visit the Film Archive is yet to come: the Thai Film Museum, box room for very unique artifacts and film memorabilia. It is amidst great thoughts of repentance, death threats and the acknowledgement that I will lose a few friendships that I am unveiling my greatest secret in all Bangkok nightlife. A far cry from the hit and mix that many drinking establishments in Bangkok are, here you have a certain sure bet. To say that this bar has an extensive whiskey menu would be a truly unfair injustice, I stopped counting when I got to 116 different bottles before giving myself to the more delectable task of savouring some of them. Behind the bar, a delightful whiskhy encyclopedia that will share with you his whisky adventures, or how he envisioned this place when he was 15 and tasted the ambrosia for the first time. Turn the all glitzy corner from Emporium into Sukhumvit 24 and this little hole on the wall offers up a relaxed vibe and serious Spanish nosh, in the shape of “pinchos”, “tapas” and “raciones”. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a new brunch place, and definitely no bistro. Easy on the eye, simple and functional, the efforts here have been definitely been invested in the food. Whether it is meat, fish or the classics, the solid helpings are unfussy and bursting at the seams with spanishness, and that is something I know a little about. What´s officially known as the 'Red Lantern Bar' has become well known to our posse as simply 'Mojito Bar'. For obvious reasons that they make damn good mojitos, along with an extensive list of other cocktails we've never tried (but we're sure are just as good). Their soundtrack to revive your spirit after your long day out can vary from Guns'n'Roses to Lil' Wayne and if you have your iPod handy (and the owners have had enough to drink) you might even wind up as guest DJ. Seats (the very small rickety wooden kind) are limited though, so don't arrive too late, as its also a popular haunt with store owners thirsty for a knock off. Also, please note: Red Lantern is open long after all the shopping is over, however the gate will be locked around 20:00 so climb over it at your own risk or enter via the Kamphaeng Phet MRT entrance. / Anissa Dove

For reasons apart from the fact that its hot, crowded and the sois are so terribly narrow. For vintage lovers, Wang Lang is a dream. In fact you could pretty much re-invent yourself top to toe in but a few hours. Stock is quality and prices are low. A hotel that does not welcome undomesticated people (sic) had to make it to the pages of Le Cool sooner or later, even more when management declares that it is run on conservative principles and fosters traditional values and it has been untouched by pop culture and modern primitivism (sic again). It is the kind of establishment that attracts cultured occidentals, dreamers and innocuous eccentrics (they said it, not me) and that does not welcome catamites and the like (I confess I had to google that one). It also has a foyer to dream about, designed in art deco style in the 1950s that unfortunately you will not be able to visit, since patronizing the restaurant is unadvised by the very own management unless you have been granted approval of your ethos. Burgers are culinary survivors. We have no doubt about it. While tastemakers keep proclaiming with their verbal diarrhea new culinary discoveries around the world (that includes Bangkok), comfort food (whatever that is) is here to stay…trendy if you wish so. We swear this words are true after eating for the nth time a Robbie Island pasture-fed wagyu with mushroom ragout, torched goat cheese and some hand-cut smoky salted chips, all seasoned with the Chefs home-made tomato sauce. If you go and ask Roland Graham, Chef Bar commander, he certainly would add some of his home-made recipes to the tasty list of survivors.
